Bring ideas to life; study Animation and Illustration at the University of Bolton

Art used to be about sketching still-life arrangements and painting landscapes and portraits. While fine art still exists, technology has enabled creative imaginations to be brought to life. Over the last few decades Animation and Illustration has advanced dramatically, take a look at The Simpsons for example, in 1990 everything was in 2D, but you only have to take a look at recent episodes to see the dramatic changes.

If you are aiming to build a career in the creative world, Animation and Illustration provide plenty of exciting job opportunities. Film and television production are one option, along with creating characters and scenes for video games, books and media advertising.

Could you be following in the footsteps of past students or leading animators such as Hayao Miyazaki and Jonas Mosesson? They are commissioned to work on music videos, interactive advertising, promotional campaigns, comics and special effects.

How do you get into Animation and Illustration?

Artist ability is the foundation of Animation and Illustration, being able to draw, paint and create is essential for developing characters and ideas. It would help if you also were an original thinker; inspired by contemporary animators and illustrators, but ready to forge your own path.

An Animation and Illustration Degree will provide you with the facilities, learning, inspiration and support you need to get experimental. It is an opportunity to carve out your original style and apply it in an exciting variety of practical projects.

Animation and Illustration are effective forms of expression; however, a degree course will also develop your communication skills. This is an essential skill for liaising with clients, working in collaboration and presenting concepts when you are in the workplace.

Where do Animators and Illustrators work?

Our Animation and Illustration graduates have gone on to work for television broadcasting companies, publishing houses, design agencies and animation studios. Some are working for leading brands, while others are freelancers.

The starting salaries can be quite low, however, as you gain experience and build your reputation, the opportunities and pay will expand accordingly. Never forget that as an Animation and Illustration graduate, you also have the perfect tools for self-promotion!
