Can robots solve the social care crisis?

28/04/2020

It is predicted that 700,000 additional care workers will be needed in the UK over the next ten years. Could robots play a part in meeting this demand?

Over the past decade, services which focused on preventative measures and generic care provisions have been cut. Social workers and care providers now have to prioritise cases and focus on those with the greatest need. With apparent gaps in provision, could robots provide the solution for elderly, mental health and physical health care?

The pros and cons of robotic healthcare

Technology is already providing some solutions. Wearable devices and nanosensors are already being used to track minor biological changes. These provide an early indication of potential health problems. Mobile devices are helping to improve service efficiency and to guide patients through physiotherapy exercises and other rehabilitation.

When it comes to robots, Japan is leading the way. These machines can provide practical support, such as lifting patients and emotional support, including interactive entertainment. Robotic doctors are also proving that they are as capable as doctors at diagnosing symptoms.

While technology can enhance health and social care, it is not a fool-proof solution. There are concerns around data protection, malfunctions, personalisation and the ethics behind machines looking after the most vulnerable in our society.

Exploring policy, values and delivery in health and social care

Health & Social Care Degree students must keep up-to-speed with industry developments. The University of Bolton has a purpose-built suite which provides a realistic clinical setting for the practical application of learning.

We study policy, safeguarding, care planning and delivery, alongside debating topical issues, such as robots in Social Care. If robots can provide part of the solution, our students must be informed and confident with emerging technology. Do you want to be part of the revolution in Health and Social Care?
