The great art movements of the past have all rejected established styles and accepted themes. Prints of post-impressionist or pop artists may adorn many homes today, but at the time of their creation, the artistic ability was called into question. The reaction was often negative because it went against conventional norms.

Modern artists continue to deliver strong messages, political statements and depictions of our time. Those with a passion for art should be inspired to explore the themes portrayed by Cindy Sherman, Adrian Ghenie, Anselm Kiefer and Njideka Akunyili Crosby. You may feel a natural draw to the message or techniques employed by Luo Zhongli, Cecily Brown, Mark Bradford or Albert Oehlen.

The importance of visiting art exhibitions

Experiencing the art of others broadens knowledge and informs the continuous progression of art. For this reason, we encourage all students on our Art & Design courses to visit exhibitions as part of the learning process.

In addition to contemporary artists, galleries give us access to historic art of importance. This year, an exhibition of work by Artemisia Gentileschi, the first woman to be admitted into Florence’s art academy will be on show in London. Art by radical Neo-Impressionist Félix Fénéon can be discovered in York, and there are masterpieces in every city’s art gallery to be admired and enjoyed.

Developing your artistic style

Seeing paintings, photography, sculptures and installations first-hand provides a very different insight than viewing them on a screen or in a book. The scale, the technique and the detail are often lost in reproductions. Getting up close to art that resonates with you will impact on your work and will help you to develop your own unique style.
