For decades there has been a lot of conversation in the media surrounding housing. From the extortionate and varying prices of a house to the vast developments popping up across the country. ‘New builds’, as they’re so lovingly nicknamed, have been designed to help get people onto the property ladder through Help to Buy schemes.
In December 2019, the government released a statement saying they intend to build 1 million homes in the next five years. It’s a tall order, but what does this mean for the construction industry?
The UK construction workforce is ageing, with over 20% of tradespeople over the age of 50 and 15% in their sixties. According to a study conducted by YouGov Omnibus, just 3% of people aged 18-24 have searched for a construction job, which means there is a considerable shortage of skilled workers.
Alongside the shortage of tradesmen, there is also a huge demand for surveyors, construction managers, planners and those working in spatial design.
The built environment isn’t only expanding in the housing sector. As towns and cities grow larger in population, there are more demands for schools, hospitals and other local amenities. So much demand throughout the sector means there has never been a better time to get into the construction industry.
There are many routes into the construction industry, whether you desire to be a more hands-on and skilled worker, in a managerial position or design. A great way to begin your journey is to enrol onto the University of Bolton construction course.
