Student visit – Bolton Hospital Laboratories Student visit – Bolton Hospital Laboratories

On 25th March 2019, the second year Medical Biology students were given an access all areas tour of the Medical Laboratories at Royal Bolton Hospital. They were shown around the laboratories specialising in microbiology, chemistry, haematology, ante-natal screening, blood transfusion and histology. Staff at the hospital explained their day to day job roles, and how their job is crucial for healthcare in Bolton and the surrounding area. For example, the students were shown how Royal Bolton Hospital deals with screening for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and how the hospital is the North-West hub for ante-natal screening of chromosomal abnormalities. Feedback from the students was excellent, as they felt it gave them a real insight into the careers of NHS Biomedical Scientists.
