Study in the UK’s historic home of textile innovation

Bolton has a long and historical relationship with the textile industry that stretches back 650 years. Formerly one of the largest and most productive cotton spinning centres in the world, Bolton is still the home of textile innovation today, with the University of Bolton’s courses in Fashion and Textiles receiving international attention.

At the University of Bolton, our students are regularly in attendance at some of the world’s leading trade fairs such as Surtex New York, Indigo Paris, The British Craft Trade Fair and New Designers in London. We also continue to attract an impressive list of visiting speakers from across the commercial and craft led sectors, including Concetta Gallo MA Royal College of Art and designer for Habitat, Leigh Cooke designer for Salvatore Ferragamo and Hermes Paris, and Alison Willoughby MA Royal College of Art.

The University’s geography also plays an important part in allowing students to raise their creative profile, as our proximity and links to major galleries, workshops and the North West means students can take advantage of work placement opportunities. We encourage students to explore these institutions to gain inspiration as well as learn from successful creators.

As a leading centre of textiles and materials research, we understand how important industry experience is to support our student's future employment prospects. To ensure the best possible opportunities for new graduates, we regularly host industry-relevant live projects with external organisations and companies; designed to provide students with the experience of working to industry standards, alongside an insight into the realities of current design practice.
