What a career in Fashion and Textiles looks like

Deciding on a career path can seem like a tremendous task to begin with. After studying multiple subjects for years, you finally have an idea about what you enjoy learning and potentially a career to pursue. The next step is to look for a degree in the industry you want to head into.

In this blog, we’ll be looking at some of the careers in the Fashion and Textiles sector. You might enjoy creating your own incredible garments or help designing some beautiful patterns whether for a small a boutique brand, or for one of the big labels. Creativity, methodology and passion are all critical elements, which is why learning about it these is vital to becoming successful. Potential careers

For many, the dream is owning your own fashion label and having your clothes walk down the catwalks in London, New York, Paris or Milan. The end game can be to design beautiful creations for international brands and have your work on the cover of Vogue magazine. However, for graduates the journey will need begin learning from, and working alongside more senior colleagues.

Becoming a fashion designer requires out the box thinking, not only predicting what is next for the fashion world but making it suitable for the target audience. Your designs may only appeal to the rich and famous, or they could be accessible for everyday families. Men’s or women’s fashion, accessories, undergarments, outerwear, there are plenty of different options to choose from, and you might only discover what you love to create during your degree.

Day-to-day, a fashion designer will be working alongside fellow ‘fashionistas’, evolving, developing and improving the design. Once the desired effect has been achieved, garments will go into production, ready for distribution.

In the spotlight

Dame Zandra Rhodes is a British textile designer. In addition to the beautiful garments that she has created since the 60’s, she has designed prints for homeware, including furniture and interiors. She has received numerous awards during her career, and in 2019 was awarded the Walpole British Luxury Legend Award.
