What a career in Film FX looks like

Deciding on a career path can seem like a tremendous task to begin with. After studying multiple subjects for years, you finally have an idea about what you enjoy learning and potentially a career to pursue. The next step is to look for a degree in the industry you want to head into.

In this blog, we will look at careers in the Film FX industry, and what the potential roles look like. In recent decades, special effects in films have become more elaborate, the job roles have become more and more specialised, and now big blockbuster films with have hundreds of crew members working on special effects in pre and post-production.

Potential careers

Many people in the special effects industry work with computers, animating, using green screens and other dynamic props. One of the oldest and most traditional types of effects is applying makeup. Special effects makeup can create a whole world of different visuals. In some films, they are used to transform a healthy person looking half-withered and dead; in others, they completely change a person into another creature or species with horns, excess skins and different prosthetic features.

For someone looking to become a special effects makeup artist, it is vital to be able to have great skill with everything, from applying a fancy eye shadow effect to horrific battle wounds and scars. The ability to use makeup in multiple different ways is vital for success.

Aome days you’ll be on set transforming people on a regular basis, and then others you will be improving your portfolio by testing new products at home. Making a name for yourself in this industry is essential to getting repeat work so ensure you’re always refreshing your skills.

In the spotlight

Don Lanning has made a name for himself in the industry as an exceptional creature creator. His work has featured in films such as Star Trek Beyond, Batman vs Superman, Pirates of the Caribbean. Lanning’s work has taken him all over the globe, his skills are high in demand, but he still has time for the students and visited the University of Bolton earlier this year.
