What can I do with a Nursing and Midwifery degree?

The human body is a fantastic machine. The majority of the time it maintains and regulates our operations without a second thought. When serious illness or injury hits, we need medical care. At other times, such as childbirth, we benefit from medical support. With a Nursing and Midwifery degree, you can be there to protect the lives of others.

What are the career options for a qualified Nurse or Midwife?

The majority of Nursing and Midwifery graduates will register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and apply for roles within the NHS. Here is just a taster of the specialist areas of Nursing that you might consider:

  • A&E Nurse
  • Chronic Pain
  • Dementia Care
  • Mental Health
  • Midwifery
  • Paediatrics
  • Palliative Care
  • Paramedic

Do all Nursing and Midwifery graduates work in hospitals?

Within the area of Midwifery, you typically gain experience in a maternity ward, with the role focusing on the antenatal care of expectant mothers, through to the delivery. There are then options to specialise in home births, to work in a specialist birthing centre or even to work with charitable organisations around the world.

Nursing can also be a hospital-based occupation. Alternatively, you could work in a school, a pharmacy, in the Armed Forces, in a GP surgery, a field of research or even on a cruise ship. Nursing skills are required in every community, so this career route opens up opportunities to work abroad.

Preparing you for the Future

The University of Bolton Nursing and Midwifery degrees are delivered in partnership with local teaching hospitals. Half of the learning is undertaken in the work environment, with real patients, facilities and qualified teams. This high volume of practical experience gives students a better idea of which career opportunities appeal.

With a national shortage of nurses and midwives in the UK, the job prospects for graduates are excellent. If you're interested in making a difference in people's lives, you can find out more information here.
