The perfect smile can be worth a million dollars. Just think about those famous faces on the red carpet, beaming in front of the cameras and showing off their absolutely, indisputably pristine teeth. Don’t feel too bad. It doesn’t matter how much you brush, floss and rinse, you’re looking at the work of top class dentists.

Teeth are naturally a bit messy. Most of us have at least one or two slightly out of place, and today’s high sugar diets mean we have to be especially diligent just to stay on top of things. Rest assured that Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts, noted equally for their blinding white grins as their acting talents, don’t have superpowers of dental hygiene.

It’s not something to take too lightly, though. Our smiles are an important part of how we interact with people, and rightly or wrongly, others do make judgements based on the state of your gnashers. So dentists certainly aren’t around just to service our sense of vanity.

Aside from the basic needs of healthy teeth and gums to do basic things like chewing, a lot of our confidence and ability to be outgoing is dependent on our health and appearance, and teeth are a sensitive part of this package.

That’s why at the top of the profession, dentists earn serious money serving the great and good. If you’re a film actor and the value of your brand is tied to your physique and appearance, say the Chris Hemsworths of the world, then you’re probably going to invest a lot in ensuring everything is in top shape.

But even for those of us without a pressing need to look like a Norse god, these are still important concerns. That’s why skilled dentists and dental technicians are always in high demand, and well compensated for their services.

So if you’re someone who wants to work in the medical profession and help people with one of the most visible aspects of their wellbeing and confidence, dentistry could be an amazing career for you.

A couple of hundred years ago, dentures were common. At the point in history when refined sugar was introduced to Western diets before dental technology caught up, hygiene was in dreadful shape. Everything from polished wood to ivory was being stuck in people’s gums to replace rotting teeth.

In a funny way we’re approaching a similar period. Dental tech is now so good, and is getting so accessible, that people are starting to consider dentures as better options than even healthy teeth. There’s only going to be an increasing demand for dental specialists, and it won’t be long before we can all get that celebrity smile.

By studying one of the University of Bolton’s General Dental Council (GDC) approved dental technology degrees at our £4.8 million Centre for Dental Sciences, you will have the competitive edge required to excel in this field. Our programmes lead to professional registration as a Dental Care Professional.
