Kevin Burke

Lecturer - Community Development and Youth Work

As a Human Geographer, I have an interest in understanding the way in which 'people' and 'place' interact with one another in urban and community settings. Subsequently, I lecture across two undergraduate programmes‚ (BA) ‘Community Development and Youth Work’, ‘Health and Social Care’ and I also teach on the (MA) ‘Community Development and Youth Studies’ degree.

Some of my current research interests and activities are based upon my PhD thesis, ‘Urban Renewal and the Just City: The potentiality of a co-operative Manchester city-region’. Emergent debates from my work that align with my teaching and research interests are cross sector relationships, power and politics, leadership and management within complex urban settings, participation and engagement, democracy, and co-operative working.

Responsibilities at the University include placement co-ordination, dissertation supervisions, fieldtrip co-ordination, link tutoring, external examining and I am also involved in the School of Health and Wellbeing research group. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a member of the Regional Studies Association (RSA) and I hold post-graduate qualifications in research and teaching. I am also a member of an Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) steering group with other stakeholders and representative bodies in Bolton.
