Malcolm Duncan

Malcolm has led, managed and enhanced (where appropriate) the HNC Civil Engineering Studies Programme for over ten years, progressing the programme through several successful internal validation and external approval events.

A major part of Malcolm’s role as Senior Lecturer at the University of Bolton involves the delivery of geospatial engineering modules covering terrestrial and satellite surveying methods. Modules are delivered across all undergraduate Civil Engineering and Built Environment programmes within the School of Engineering and incorporate the planning, execution and monitoring, of control, detail and stakeout surveys. Malcolm places a high emphasis on both the analysis of the “precision” of all captured data, together with the interrogation of survey “accuracy” achieved, using manual and industry-standard software techniques. He also instructs students in the production of geomapping of surveyed land areas.

Malcolm has achieved the status of Pilot in Command of a drone (unmanned aerial vehicle) and has secured permission for commercial operations (PfCO) from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on behalf of the university’s Geospatial Engineering unit.

Malcolm has designed and delivered a variety of bespoke surveying courses for industry and he also supervises (and is a second assessor of) final year project and dissertation work for the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree and more recently as a second assessor for the MRes Environmental Management degree programme.
