Professor Subbiyan Rajendran (Raj) receiving the medal from Mrs Helen Rowe, Chairman of the Council, The Textile Institute, Manchester University of Bolton’s Emeritus Professor Subbiyan Rajendran (‘Raj’) has been honoured with a prestigious medal by the Textile Institute. He received the S G Smith Memorial Medal at a ceremony at The Lowry, Salford. It was presented for Raj’s devotion to the furtherance of scientific knowledge concerning fibrous and biomedical materials. The award was first inaugurated in 1964 and since then only 36 eminent scientists have received it. After 17 years’ service at the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA), India, Raj moved to the University of Bolton in 1998 until 2017. During his time at the university he was actively involved in Healthcare & Biomedical Textile Devices research, teaching and consultancy assignments at the Institute for Materials Research and Innovation. He was involved in research and development for more than 30 years and successfully completed a number of research projects in the past, funded by companies and government funding agencies. Raj also received a prestigious Research Fellowship award from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). He said of this latest award: “This honour would not have been possible without the academic support and comfortable working environment that I received from the University of Bolton between 1998 and 2017.”
