Student visit – Thackray Medical Museum, Leeds Student visit – Thackray Medical Museum, Leeds

Foundation Medical Biology students visited the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds on the 8th of April where they gained insights into how disease was considered in the past and how medical innovations developed. Exhibitions were wide ranging and covered aspects of well being related to Public Health, the pharmacological uses of plants, learn how anesthesia was developed, as well as trace advances in reducing maternal and infant mortality. The students particularly focused upon the communication of science to different audiences and evaluated the displays within the galleries. In addition, this group of students have recently been examining medical instruments provided through a loan of a ‘Student Toybox’ from the Liverpool Medical Institute. Being able to handle artifacts and to discuss their uses has helped bring medical biology to life and to put their studies into a wider context.
