Film FX

As one of our students, you will regularly attend lectures from guest speakers such as Neill Gorton, multi-award-winning artist/designer, founder of the world-renowned Millennium FX company and our Visiting Professor of Special Effects. We will encourage you to build a network of professional contacts, attend events and undertake industry projects so that you are ready to enter this exciting industry once you graduate. Thanks to the excellent student support we provide throughout our courses, the University of Bolton has been ranked number one for student satisfaction in Greater Manchester by The Complete University Guide 2020 for the third year in a row. 

Live projects are a key aspect of our courses; you will gain experience working to briefs and script scenes so that you can find the most time-efficient, cost-effective and visually impressive way to turn ideas into reality. The hands-on experience involved in our courses has led many of our previous and current students to secure their first job before they have even graduated. Small class sizes and passionate lecturers who provide valuable one-to-one support to our students have helped the University of Bolton to secure a top-five position in the UK for teaching quality for the second year running, as per The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 and 2020. 

As a Film FX student, you will have access to facilities like:

• Casting and moulding room

• 3D print studio

• 3D modelmaking workshop

• Specialist make-up studios

• Cintiq studio

Moreover, we have a site-wide render farm that uses distributed computing to render high quality, complex photorealistic scenes and environments.

You will also use industry-standard software, such as:

• Autodesk Maya for 3D work

• The Foundry’s Nuke and Mari for compositing and digital painting

• ZBrush for digital sculpting

• Houdini for technical effects and dynamics

Some of the skills you can develop using our advanced facilities include:

• Prosthetic make-up creation and application

• Modelmaking

• Prop building

• Mould making

• Costume making 

• Photography
