The University of Bolton commits to work in partnership with another Bolton University

Members of the Bolton University of the Third Age (U3A) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with senior management at the University of Bolton, heralding a new, closer working relationship. Chairman of the Bolton U3A Tony Pearson and Assistant Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, Bill Webster, put pen to paper. The U3A is a registered charity and operates at local, regional and national levels, for older people – or ‘third-agers’ – who are no longer in full-time employment and retain an interest in life-long learning and social recreation with like-minded friends. The Bolton group was formed 26 years ago and has almost 400 members. It has a wide variety of interest groups, including creative writing, digital photography, cinema and local history. Bill, who is also Acting Principal of Bolton College, which recently merged with the University of Bolton, spoke to members of the U3A when the visited the university to sign the document. He said: “We are incredibly supportive of your aims. Today formalises our agreement and cements it in place. “I am sure there will be huge benefits to both parties over the coming years and we look forward to working with you. “Your members have expertise that I am certain will be valuable across all the age ranges we cater for at the university and the college. In return we can offer our skills and resources.” Tony said: “Learning in the U3A follows a self-help learning principle, with no distinction between teachers and learners. “Learning is for its own sake, with enjoyment being the prime motive, not qualifications or awards.” He added: “Members form interest groups covering as wide a range of topics and activities as they choose, run by members, for members. “We are delighted that our approach to the university met with such a positive response and look forward to where this Memo of Understanding can take us in the years ahead. “It is a great way of bringing town and gown together.” The Bolton U3A’s main monthly general meeting is on the fourth Friday of each month (except December), 2-4pm at St Andrew & St George United Reformed Church, St Georges Road, Bolton.
