What a career in Graphic Design looks like

Deciding on a career path can seem like a tremendous task to begin with. After studying multiple subjects for years, you finally have an idea about what you enjoy learning and potentially a career to pursue. The next step is to look for a degree in the industry you want to head into.

In this blog, you will discover what a career in graphic design could look like. Graphic design is a broad area; it can include many different tasks, but most of the time, it depends on where you work as to what your role entails. By the end of this blog, you’ll find out a little bit more about the role.

Potential careers

At first glance, a degree in Graphic Design will lead you only to that job title, but in fact, there are plenty of roles you can take on. The skills you will learn on this type of degree will allow you to set up in a variety of areas, including logo design, web design, layout artists, art directors or even illustration and animation.

Graphic designers can work in marketing and design agencies or in-house. There are plenty of benefits to working in the agency, but the main attraction is that you will be able to work on a variety of clients, and projects. Multiple clients allow designers to get a good range of work, helping their ‘creative juices’ flow as well as increasing their skillset, due to the demands of the role.

Day-to-day duties usually involve fulfilling the clients brief. Briefs vary depending what support the clients require, however they all require essential information such as objective of creative, sizing, type of work, deadline and any ‘must contain’ information such as call-to-actions, and contact details. The better a brief is, the better the understanding, therefore the easier and faster the work can be provided.

In the spotlight

There are plenty of incredible graphic designers in the world; one of them is the famed and talented Jessica Walsh. After enjoying success as an illustrator, art director and graphic designer, she set up her own agency in New York called, &Walsh. She learnt her skills at the Rhode Island School of Design but now teaches design and typography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
