What a career in Media and Photography looks like

Deciding on a career path can seem like a tremendous task to begin with. After studying multiple subjects for years, you finally have an idea about what you enjoy learning and potentially a career to pursue. The next step is to look for a degree in the industry you want to head into.

In this blog, we will look at some of the incredible careers you can pursue with a Media and Photography degree. You might choose a career in advertising, marketing, PR, or even publishing. You could help on a film set or photograph international festivals. The skills that you develop are incredibly desirable and diverse, so there are plenty of options.

Career options

For many people that work in media, being on-set is an incredible opportunity. Getting to travel the world, see incredible locations, work alongside other talented people and enjoy your work is not common in any industry. Yet, within photography and media, there are ample opportunities.

An on-set photographer may be employed for multiple reasons. It could be part of a fashion photoshoot, to grab some stills for a movie poster, or it could be product placement. One thing is for sure, no two projects will be the same, and there will be plenty of variety. You might be photographing the same item if you work for an in-house brand, but to be in the same location is rare.

As part of a publishing team, your job will be to capture the right image to help promote the subject. From there, editing, animation and even the PR teams will be the ones to get your picture to the right people. Seeing your work come to life, through being published would be an amazing feeling.

In the spotlight

Locations can take you all over the world; your role might be to capture the natural habitat of other cultures. One photographer whose work has sent him soaring into the public eye is American Steve McCurry, better known as the man who took the photograph of Afghan Girl. Featuring on the cover of the 1984 National Geographic, the photo has been highly viewed for decades and is still used as an example of incredible work in lectures to this day.
