A growing population and your role within it

Year-on-year since 1982 the UK population has been growing, something which goes unnoticed in most areas of the countries, but with where it is realised the most, is on our health services. In the UK, approximately 900,000 women give birth every year, and for each of these children, a Midwife delivers, whether they be still or live births.

Training to be a Midwife is an admirable role, bringing a new life into the world is one of the most rewarding careers out there. According to the latest Royal College of Midwives the analysis of birth figures that was released in August 2019, the NHS needs another 2,500 Midwives to cope with the demand the NHS currently faces.

In the current Midwife workforce, the majority work part-time, with the average age being 43 years old. The sector is ageing, and with 96% of the workforce working in the NHS, in the next 20 years we could see an even higher demand for Midwives as people retire from working life.

There is more demand than ever for skilled Midwives, and most graduates will have the opportunity to walk straight into a job when they have graduated from University.

What does a Midwifery degree involve?

Our Midwifery degree at the University of Bolton recognises that for Midwives to be trained efficiently and effectively, they need to get hands-on experience. Our students spend 50% of their time in midwifery practise placements at various partner trusts in the region, something which you can select when applying.

The facilities you will use while on campus include our Clinical Simulation Suites where you can practice and develop skills using industry equipment. From meeting with expectant mothers to delivering babies and beyond, you will learn the entire journey of what it is like to welcome a child into the world when you study at the University of Bolton.
