Biomedical and Medical Engineers are high in demand. Employment in this role is predicted to grow 4% from 2019 to 2028. This increase is linked to society’s shift towards engineering solutions helping to improve patient care.

The Biomedical and Medical Engineering field seeks to combine the design and problem-solving skills of engineering with medical biological sciences in order to advance healthcare treatment. Here are some ways in which Biomedical Engineering has already succeeded.

Inventions

The meeting of these two industry sectors has enabled the development of revolutionary and life-saving concepts such as artificial organs, prosthetics, bionic contact lenses and the camera pill.

The use of these inventions has become almost every day, for example, around 6,000 aortic heart valve replacements occur each year.

Medicine

Long-term health issues have had a considerable adverse effect on our NHS for many years, with patients going back-and-forth trying to resolve health implications with experimental. The research into body functions has led to new medical solutions such as laser eye surgery.

Tools and Devices

One of the most successful areas in health care, thanks to medical engineers, is the creation of vital equipment such as MRI, ECG and ultrasound machines. Even dialysis machines were developed by engineers, which has helped to save hundreds of lives each year.

All of these areas have been developed with the help of biomedical engineering, but it doesn’t stop there. The industry is continuously evolving, and now sees artificial intelligence (AI) playing a role. AI recently used fundus imagery to predict the risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients. The deep algorithms were trained to deal with fundus images solely and from 280,000 patients could discriminate with 70% accuracy.

The demand for engineered solutions is high, and with that, the need for skilled graduates is increasing.
