Your first question might well be ‘What is Biomedical Engineering?’ In summary, it is the advancement of medical technology, insight and application to improve healthcare and rehabilitation.
Being able to live a long and healthy life is dependent on more than nutritional diets and exercise. We rely on biomedical engineers to develop new solutions that prevent illness, enhance the accuracy of diagnosis, progress treatments and encourage successful rehabilitation.
Students embarking on a Biomedical Engineering Degree have demonstrated an aptitude for science, particularly biology. They are fascinated by how the body works, the connections and the impact of illness or injury.
In addition, our students come with the engineering mindset. They are logical thinkers and natural problem solvers and mathematicians. They are keen to apply their learning to help overcome a variety of health issues.
Our high-specification lab includes computer modelling and engineering simulation software, 3D motion capture and printing technologies. These sit alongside the more traditional microscopes, test tubes and Petri dishes. Students use this equipment to create and develop products that could revolutionise healthcare.
Some of the course tutors are graduates, now undertaking PhD study. They involve the students in current research, keeping the courses fresh and relevant. Industry placements and opportunities to gain experience in patient interaction are also encouraged.
The UK is renowned for medical innovation. As such, many biomedical engineer graduates will work in research and development; either in industry or at a University. Others seek opportunities with medical device companies, hospitals and related health services.
In this role, there is the chance that you might be involved in a ground-breaking development that transforms the lives of others across the world. Is that an ambition you are ready to apply yourself to?
