Deciding on a career path can seem like a tremendous task to begin with. After studying multiple subjects for years, you finally have an idea about what you enjoy learning and potentially a career to pursue. The next step is to look for a degree in the industry you want to head into.
In this blog, we’ll be looking at the Civil Engineering sector. The combination of mathematics, science and engineering is an appealing area for those who enjoy numbers, design and mind-boggling tasks. By the end of this blog, you’ll learn a little more about the area, and be inspired by those in it.
Civil engineering is a vast industry, but most people in the sector are civil engineers, working on the different stages of products. As a civil engineer, in its broadest terms, you will be looking after the physical natural and built environment, creating designs for new roads, airports, railways and other public works.
Civil engineering has a high employment rate due to the nation’s growing population. The more people, the more need there is for housing planning, road construction, transport links and so on. Even then, railways and airports are continually growing and improving its designs to make access easier, just look at the significant expansion works that Heathrow Airport has had over the last decade.
Day-to-day, the job role could include managing the budgets of a project, providing design drawings to clients, or even overseeing the delivery of equipment. The aim is to give the client what they want, on time and on budget, whist keeping in mind any legal restrictions.
One man who started his journey in civil engineering is Carlos Slim. Not a celebrity name, but Forbes voted him the firth richest man in the world and accounts for 40% of the listings on the Mexican Stock Exchange.
