What can I do with a Biomedical Science degree?

Thousands of students elect to study biology as an A-Level subject. Although, this passion for science can often leave many wondering what career they could enjoy if they chose to pursue this topic at a degree level. While there are multiple types of Biology degrees out there, biomedical science is one of the most popular because of the variety of career options it offers.

Laboratory-based roles

As you would expect with many of these job roles, they often involve working in a laboratory. This may not always include staring into a microscope, but will no doubt involve investigative work through research, tests and analysis. Take a look at some of these potential careers:

• Biochemist – Studying chemical principles of living things and biological processes
• Biomedical Scientist – Usually specialising in infection, blood, and cell sciences or genetics and molecular pathology
• Biotechnologist – Aim to understand and manipulate basic structures of living things
• Forensic scientist – Preparing evidence from crime scenes to be used as evidence in court
• Genomic Clinical Scientist – Identify genetic and genomic alteration that could be responsible for inherited and acquired diseases or conditions
• Haematology Clinical Scientist – Diagnosing any blood, blood tissues or bone marrow disorders
• Immunology Clinical Scientist – Monitor and diagnose patients with immune system disorders
• Microbiologist – Study organisms such as bacteria and virus and algae to determine cures for illnesses
• Research scientist – Analysing information from laboratory studies to help broaden humanity’s knowledge of science
• Toxicologist – Use techniques to identify toxins in biological substances and the risks posed by them

There are plenty of labs to find work in, but typical employers for these roles are Health and Safety Executive, the Medical Research Council, the NHS and NHS Blood and Transplant, and Public Health England.
