Many keyworkers are keeping the country moving and helping those in need by providing essential services during the coronavirus pandemic. Construction is one of the industries which, although it has slowed down, has not stopped completely because the work being done is essential to preserve the economy.
In a time when the economy is taking a huge hit, it is imperative that work continues where it can, and for most construction sites, this is possible, of course with a few adjustments.
There are plenty of situations where construction workers are not in close contact with others, for example, operating a crane or a digger requires only one person. For many site workers, adhering to the two-meter social distancing rules will be fairly easy.
Those who are building vital new homes will have even more space to manoeuvre as the homes will be empty, especially those in the final stages who only need in one worker, for example, a tiler in the bathroom.
Those who are in the built environment industry can continue with their work while adhering to social distancing rules. Planners can work from home and where necessary will be able to visit empty sites; site managers will still be able to work in the on-site office, especially as it is usually a container with one or two people inside.
A lot of council homes are empty, awaiting vital work so that they can open to others safely and legally. Construction workers who are working on these homes are often working alone or with one other person, so they can easily work while social distancing. This example demonstrates how construction workers are essential to those in vulnerable situations.
Many keyworkers are thankful that they still get to go to work, but many construction workers are self-employed, which makes going to work even more important to them. Without the work, they do not earn money, and while the government has something in place for those who are self-employed the parameters mean that workers will struggle for a few months or they will receive nowhere near as much as they were by working.
The importance of the construction industry is being highlighted during the coronavirus for both the economy, citizens, and the workers themselves. If you want to be part of such an essential work force that has incredible job prospects, check out the courses on offer at the University of Bolton, here.
