Bradford Textile Society Awards

Jenny McCarthy has gained the attention of Prestigious Textiles for the second year in a row at the annual Bradford Textile Society Awards, this year gaining 2nd prize for her printed textile design for furnishing fabrics.

The competition P2 category was for a textile design suitable for domestic curtains, upholstery, cushions and blinds, drawn in repeat. This can be either a printed design using digital or conventional printing, woven jacquard or woven plain or for drapery only, an embroidery.

Jenny entered the competition with her design ‘Copper Falls’ which was originally hand-painted onto a screen using dyes and printed onto fabric, before scanning onto the computer and digitally manipulating, then heat transfer printing using the large format heat press onto a velvet furnishing fabric.

Jenny was awarded the prize from the current President of the Bradford Textile Society, Vivienne Bradley BA (Hons), at the annual Design Seminar and Award Ceremony which was held at the Dye House Gallery, Bradford College.

Discussing her opportunity to enter the competition as part of her experience on the programme, Jenny commented: ‘I entered the Bradford Textile Society Awards 2019 as part of my studies with one of my furnishing fabric designs entitled "Copper Falls".

'I was thrilled and honoured to have been awarded the second prize for the P2 Prestigious Textiles category.

'I’d like to thank the teaching staff on the Textiles & Surface Design course at the University of Bolton for the continued support and guidance throughout my time studying, as without the technical skills and knowledge I have received in the past three years, gaining such an achievement would not have been possible.'
