A dreaded Dalek from the long-running sci-fi show Doctor Who launched a mini-invasion at the University of Bolton, but there was no need to worry. The mortal enemy of the time-travelling Doctor wasn’t prowling the foyer of the Chancellor’s Mall to exterminate anyone. It was collecting cash to help fund a trip next month to a London industry recruitment fair for the university’s talented Special Effects for Film and TV students. The red and silver Dalek, based on the design from the 1960 movie Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 AD, starring Peter Cushing as Doctor Who, was built by Jim Costello, Programme Leader in Special Effects Model Making at the University of Bolton. Jim, a veteran Dalek builder who has been a fan of the TV show for four decades, said: “I have been working on this Dalek over the last semester and using it as an instructional tool for students as I have been building it. The red and silver colour scheme makes it very striking to look at.” As well as the Dalek, students displayed their own work, including a giant Kermit the Frog, the creature from The Shape of Water, a trophy from the Harry Potter movies and a silicon model of the creature Ori, from the video game Ori and the Blind Forest.
