How the Right Photograph can Change the World

Our stories are part of what makes us human. We create stories to provide perspective on the world, to help us learn and to teach others. Stories are passed on in oral tradition, writing, and visual media, whether that is film, art, or photography. Stories are also at the heart of media production and learning how to tell a story through a photograph really can change the world.

Whether you are looking to study a BA (Hons) Photography or BA (Hons) Film and Media Production, understanding the impact that the right photograph can have is essential. Think for a moment of the pictures that have captured the public imagination and have led to policy changes, new movements, and historical change. The Flower Power photograph by Bernie Boston in 1967, the lone individual in front of the tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989, the pictures that captured the toppling of the Berlin Wall; these are just a few pictures that stick with us. More recently moments captured in photographs and on video have led to the Black Live Matter movement reaching a much wider audience. It is not always world-changing; sometimes, it is just changing the world for one person. Two different photographs of a place, like Greater Manchester, could make or break your decision to study in Manchester.

The stories that are told in these photographs and captured on film are told from the perspective of the person behind the lens. Captured from a different angle or at a slightly different moment, a photograph can tell a very different story. Just as a headline can colour our opinion of a story, or a trailer can change your perspective of a film, a photograph can change your world view. The best digital media production courses understand this and the power that visual images have over the human mind. Combined with creative media technology, the best courses teach you how to use this power to create images that will stay with people and enhance the story you are trying to tell. The very best media production courses are taught at top universities, including the University of Bolton.
