At the University of Bolton, we aim to provide you with fantastic opportunities to enjoy your chosen career. We pride ourselves on being a teaching intensive and a supportive place of study. We also recognise that, even when you leave University with a top degree, the real world is competitive; gaining practical experience will make you a more desirable candidate.
For students on our Youth & Community Degree Courses, we actively encourage a commitment to volunteering. Put your skills into action through coaching a local youth sports team or becoming a scout, guide or cadet leader.
You might give your time to a mentoring role; encouraging others on social development programmes such as the National Citizenship Service. Perhaps you prefer leading activities at a local wildlife centre or working in a paediatric ward.
Whatever grabs your interest, there is no shortage of local volunteer opportunities on websites like do-it.org and Volunteering Matters. You might also spot positions being advertised on campus or in the community.
In addition to boosting your CV, volunteering provides the opportunity to develop your skills and build your confidence. It is about putting the theory into practice and getting genuine feedback.
Research has also found a correlation between volunteering and improved self-esteem and quality of life. In a volunteer placement, you can apply your skills, knowledge and experience where it really makes a difference. Seeing someone else shine because of your support and encouragement can be the greatest reward.
You never know who you might meet or where volunteering might lead. You might get the chance to try something completely new and be challenged. Get out there to discover more about your potential, whilst helping others to reach theirs.
