Mathematics Department Ranked Third For Student Satisfaction in Complete University Guide 2019

The Mathematics team at the University of Bolton take great pride in the quality of our teaching to undergraduates. In the Complete University Guide 2019, for the subject of Mathematics, Bolton was ranked in third place out of 75 university Mathematics Departments for student satisfaction. Classes are generally relatively small, with around a dozen students, enabling us to give individual support in ways that larger departments cannot achieve. We take time to get to know all of our students and to allow them to get to know us. We aim to promote a relaxed learning environment, where classes are interactive rather than just a one-way imparting of information from lecturer to students. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to contribute to group discussions of the material presented. All of the classes are supported by high-quality detailed learning materials, which may be accessed via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment “Moodle”. All lecturers are qualified in Mathematics to doctorate level (PhD) and have a vast combined experience of teaching Mathematics. Individual lecturers have specialist knowledge of mathematical physics, abstract algebra, numerical modelling and statistics, which allows the delivery of challenging and interesting specialist modules in the final year of study. Many students benefit from taking a Work Placement module in their final year, which allows them to apply the knowledge and skills that they have gained on the course in a professional environment.
