Live Literature series returns in University and Library & Museums partnership

The university’s English and Creative Writing department is proud to once again partner with Bolton Library and Museum Services for a new season of exciting live literature events this coming autumn and winter.

For the first event of this new season on Tuesday 8 October 2019, Ian McGuire will be reading from his Booker Prize-longlisted novel The North Water. McGuire will also talk to Valerie O’Riordan about this “sharp and highly original tale that grips like a thriller.”

Next month’s event promises to deliver once again. The Result is What You See Today is a new anthology of poems about running, endorsed by Commonwealth gold-medal winner Jo Pavey MBE and curated by poet-runners Paul Deaton, Kim Moore and Ben Wilkinson.

On Tuesday 5 November, come and hear poems of all kinds that “show how poetry and running have much in common, fulfilling a basic need to live freely, expressively and to feel alive.”

The season concludes on 10 December with an energised script-in-hand performance of Cathy Crabb’s play The Bubbler. Based on Satan’s fall from grace in Paradise Lost, The Bubbler began life as a response to the vitriol aimed at young working-class men during the summer riots of 2011.

Last year’s events brought some of the most exciting new literary names to Bolton, including Glen James Brown and his Orwell Prize-shortlisted novelist Ironopolis and the TS Eliot Prize-shortlisted poet Caroline Bird. Our very own Creative Writing and Theatre lecturer Ed Jones also gave a script-in-hand performance alongside Eve Steele, of his critically acclaimed play The Political History of Smack and Crack, after successful runs in Edinburgh and London.

Everyone is welcome to come to Bolton Central Library on Tuesday 8 October at 18:30, for what promises to be a fantastic night of Live Literature to kick-off the season.
