Our final year students have an opportunity to work on a project that holds a lot of interest to them, or they can expand their knowledge in a specific area in the field of biomedical engineering.
Alumni biomedical students completed exciting dissertations looking at the forefront of technology in developing medical devices, diagnostic technics, innovative treatments, improving medical device safety and performance, patient’s health monitoring and much more.
For example, an interesting project was carried out by using finite element analysis to develop a new intervertebral disc. This project was aimed to design a new structure for intervertebral discs which can mimic the property of human natural intervertebral discs.
During this project, the student expanded her knowledge of human anatomy, particularly the spinal column. She also explored the challenges of using professional simulation software for modelling and analysing the idea that she developed during the project, addressing the existing issues with artificial spinal discs.
The student's project was supported by Jenkinson Award, internal funding available to the staff at the University of Bolton to facilitate studies which have a direct impact on society.
Such projects allow students of biomedical engineering to put all the skills they have gained in their three-year course to use. Those skills are applied in practice during these projects, preparing students for their careers.
