Aashiya Patel

Associate Lecturer in Counselling

Aashiya Patel (PgDip, BSc (Hons), MBACP) is an Associate Lecturer teaching predominantly on the psychology, psychotherapy and counselling (PPC) pathway. Upon graduating with a psychology degree from the University of Manchester, Aashiya began working as part of a genetic counselling team in conjunction with St Marys Hospital.

Aashiya is now a practising counsellor and is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Her core modality is in person-centred counselling (humanistic approach) and she has further training and practice in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and transactional analysis. Aashiya has a particular interest in working with clients from the BAME community with a keen focus on overcoming barriers to accessing therapy.

Aashiya has worked as a counsellor in a range of settings including working with vulnerable women and young adults across several women’s centres, working with families and children within a genetic counselling service and clients from a range of professions; for instance, paramedics, police, Ministry of Justice and HMPPS as part of an EAP service. Alongside her teaching at the university Aashiya continues to practice as a counsellor with a particular interest in supporting clients to overcome trauma.
