Dr Richard Bailey

Lecturer - English for Academic Purposes

I am a lecturer in English for Academic and Specific Purposes (EAP/EASP) in the School of Education. My disciplinary background is in applied and sociolinguistics. I have over twenty-five years’ experience working in higher education in English language and student academic literacy support contexts and on academic programmes in English language, TESOL and linguistics. I have taught in a variety of pre-sessional, in-sessional programmes for international students in that time and I have taught applied and sociolinguistics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

In my current post, I work with colleagues on our International Foundation Year in English. I led the teaching and course development on the International Foundation Year programme in Business and Management and the International Pre-master’s programme for several years. I provide a range of customised interventions for international and domestic student cohorts to support their academic literacy and critical thinking skills development. In addition, I contribute to the research skills programme for post-graduate research students in my areas of expertise. I have contributed successive years to the annual TIRI (Teaching Intensive, Research Informed) conference (held at the university since 2015) and recently the new in-house Journal of Student of Learning and the Student Experience (JoLaSE) for which I have an editorial role.

My interests in teaching and research link to my doctoral study: student writing and academic literacy development in higher education. I presently supervise Doctor of Education students. As an applied and sociolinguist, I am interested in: language and discourse in education, student writing and academic literacies pedagogy in tertiary education, English for Academic and/or Specific purposes practice and practitioner development.
