Dr Timothy Walton

Tim is a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bolton and works closely with students across the School of Engineering to develop their mathematical capabilities. He has always had an interest in exploring the world around us and understanding how it works; it just so happens that the way he has found to achieve this is through the use of mathematics. By employing various techniques to formulate mathematical models, he has studied topics as diverse as the forces between objects at the nano-scale to the generation of jets of matter from astrophysical objects. Tim enjoys the way different branches of mathematics, even those which seem disparate and abstract, combine to help us describe and understand the physical world.
Far from being a pure mathematician, Tim describes himself as a mathematical physicist and is active in researching numerous areas of modern physics. He obtained his PhD in the Department of Physics at Lancaster University under the tutelage of Prof. Robin Tucker, exploring the interaction of light and matter at a level where relativistic effects become important. Initially, he admits to not having much thought on the problem that would eventually form his thesis, so he essentially decided to try and investigate any idea that sparked his imagination. In order to achieve this, he was compelled to study numerous topics in mathematics
