Professor Subbiyan Rajendran (Raj) is a distinguished research scientist and has gained a worldwide recognition especially in biomedical textile research. He is currently Emeritus Professor at the University of Bolton, Bolton. UK. He has previously held the position of Professor of Biomedical Materials and STEM/SEM Champion at the University of Bolton. His research on structural modification of various textile substrates and developing biomedical materials for healthcare and hygiene received greater attention globally. A variety of biomedical devices has been developed, and an example of a few products include: Non-adherent high absorption wound dressings; Low modulus cast cloth for orthopaedic casting; Antimicrobial textile products for healthcare & hygiene applications; 3D single-layer compression bandages for managing venous leg ulcers; Slash-resistance-hygiene protective garments; Odour adsorbent dressings for infected wounds; Anti-decubitus mattress; Various hygiene products (HairTite, HygieNets, Kleen Cap and Tek-Chef); and ‘All-in-one’ collagen-booster therapeutic wound dressings.
Professor Rajendran has so far authored 175 publications and that include 11 books, 21 book chapters and 8 patents. He has recently edited a book titled ‘Advanced Textiles for Wound Care’ that features up-to-date information on the majority aspects of wound care and management, including difficult-to-heal chronic wounds. The book covers interdisciplinary subject areas of smart textiles and nursing.
Recently Raj has been honoured with a prestigious medal by the Textile Institute. It was presented for Raj’s devotion to the furtherance of scientific knowledge concerning fibrous and biomedical materials. Raj also received a prestigious Research Fellowship award from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO)
