Postgraduate Study: Finding the Right Path for You

Choosing the wrong Undergraduate degree is just something that happens. Through no fault of anyone’s, and for many different reasons, some students simply realise that the course they’ve chosen doesn’t tick the boxes they want it to. Many can jump sideways and continue their studies with a slightly different focus, like swapping history for ancient history, while others simply realise that University life is not for them. In some cases, people get all the way through a degree before realising that their interests lie elsewhere.

If that third and final point sounds familiar, then we urge you not to panic. Firstly, completing an Undergraduate degree is a huge achievement, regardless of the path you now wish to take. Secondly, you’ve got options; Postgraduate study can be as extensive as you want it to be, and it’s perfect for anyone wishing to realign their understanding to better reflect their new interests.

Embrace your new ambitions

Let’s suppose that you’re our history student from the first paragraph, and that you discovered a passion for poetry towards the end of your second year. You completed your Undergraduate degree, but now wish that you’d studied English to delve even deeper into the world of Wordsworth, Dickinson, and Shakespeare. You weren’t to know three years ago that you would be spending the summer entering your work into festivals, but here you are.

Postgraduate study allows you to refine your expertise and to push yourself in new directions. Just because you entered the world of further education with certain preconceptions and ambitions, that does not mean you must leave it with the same of either. Far from it, in fact. By opting for a Postgraduate or master’s course, you can continue your education until you find your path. That’s not the path that you set out for yourself while you studied A-Levels, nor is it the one you expected to take when you first left your hometown for a new city. It’s the one that feels right for you now.

For those with a particular end goal in mind when it comes to the world of work, it would be worth considering a Career Development Master’s degree. These courses have been introduced to help their participants take the next steps in their careers. With a range of different lengths and study arrangements, these real-world qualifications are ideal for anyone looking to stand out from the crowd.
