From entertainment to space flight: practically everything in the modern world relies on computing to function. Our Centre for Applied Computer Science offers you the chance to enter this dynamic and evolving world of digital technology, equipped with the right creative and technical skills.
By studying our computing degree courses at the University of Bolton, you will be able to develop all the skills needed to pursue a career in the fast-paced and lucrative software engineering, computer programming, and cloud infrastructure industries. At the University of Bolton, you’ll be taught relevant industry programming languages, and enjoy the use of professional-level facilities and equipment.
We are the first UK university to become a RedHat Academy, incorporating RedHat Linux certification training into our modules. We also take pride in providing a positive learning experience and the university is proud to have been ranked in the top five in the UK for teaching quality for the second year running by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.
Our BSc (Hons) Computer Networks and Security students may also have the opportunity to take CCNA exams on-campus next year, as we deliver the industry-standard Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) curriculum in our networking modules and we’re currently in the process of becoming a Pearson VUE Authorised Test Centre, meaning you may be able to take your CCNA exam on campus in the future.
Our BSc (Hons) Computing courses are specially developed by industry professionals to help you gain resourceful insights and abilities to design, develop, build and maintain complex computer systems in modern digital industries. That’s the reason why our students are considered valuable additions to any business, demonstrated by the excellent track record of all our graduates gaining employment.
Our BEng (Hons) Software Engineering prepares graduates for a career in one of the world’s most in-demand professions, software engineering*. You’ll develop key skills required to work in this exciting global industry including machine learning, artificial intelligence and programming. By working on projects from analysis through to design, development, testing and maintenance, you’ll gain experience at every stage of the project lifecycle. Graduate software engineers can expect a £24,000 starting salary and could, within a few years, be on the average software engineering salary of £35,769**.
Our apprenticeship courses allow you to combine your university experience with work-based learning and ongoing professional development. This flexible approach to learning and working will allow you to develop as a student and an employee, as you simultaneously gain on-the-job training and earn your degree qualification.

As a student on one of our computing courses you could be using Google and Amazon cloud infrastructure, or learning programming languages such as python and C#.
