What a career in Accountancy looks like

Choosing which degree to study can be challenging. Weighing up multiple options, between what you enjoy, what you’re good at and what you want to be doing in the future. At the end of the day, the best way to discover where your degree will take you is to investigate the job roles in the sector.

In this blog, we’ll be focusing on Accountancy careers and popular job roles in the industry. There are many different types of accountants, working in-house, at an Accountancy practice or even freelance. Not only that but a degree in accountancy doesn’t mean you have to be an accountant. By the end, you’ll be able to picture your future career and take inspiration from one of the sectors affluent figures.

Potential careers

As with any degree, there are a variety of careers to embark upon after graduation. One option which is available to graduates is to become a financial analyst.

This type of role is one of the most rewarding in the sector as it involves a lot of rigorous work, with many incredible opportunities to grow skills and develop into senior positions within a company. 

Financial analysts mainly work in-house at large corporate firms, searching for economic opportunities. Among the day-to-day events such as attending meetings and networking with potential clients, financial analysts have the role of assessing the worth of various businesses. By gathering data and looking at the financial performance/history of a company, the job of the analyst is to determine the economic wellbeing of a company and whether it is a sound investment opportunity. 

The responsibilities within the role may change over time as you gain seniority, juniors may begin putting reports together and slowly over time present findings to large investors. This role is excellent for someone who has an investigative nature.

People in the spotlight

Accountancy is an accessible career path for many, so it comes as no surprise that for some famous people, it was their original career goal before gaining fame. However, for some famous people, it is a future. 

International football star, Leah Williamson, is currently a young footballer star for England’s Women’s team, but she is aware she needs a future career for when she retires from the sport. She has been training to become an accountant during her spare time and has been focused on gaining a career in finance for some time.

The first step to starting a career in the finance industry is to get your degree in Accountancy.
