What a career in Art & Design and Fine Art looks like

Choosing which degree to study can be challenging. Weighing up multiple options, between what you enjoy, what you’re good at and what you want to be doing in the future. At the end of the day, the best way to discover which degree to choose and where it could take you is to do some investigating into the sector.

In this blog, we’ll be focusing on Art & Design and Fine Art degrees, and the popular job roles in the industry. Many creative people just wish to remain artsy but will be told that becoming an artist is not a realistic job role, on the contrary, there are plenty of ways to stay creative, you just need to discover the right one for you. By the end, you’ll be able to picture your future career and take inspiration from some affluent figures in the sector.

Potential careers

As with any degree, there are a variety of careers to embark upon after graduation. You may decide on your profession after experimenting with a wide range of media, whether that be digital or physical art. One option which is available to graduates is to become a concept artist, this role combines a wide variety of art forms, including sculpting.

Something many creative people enjoy is bringing the imagination to life. As a concept artist, your role is to visualize and create art for characters, creatures, vehicles, environments and more. There are a variety of ways in which this happens, for character creation, you will usually receive a brief or even the script for the film or TV show to create. As the concept artist, it is up to you to bring the words and imagination of the writer to life.

Day-to-day, you might be reading about the character or scene, bringing what you’ve imagined to life. From there, the process of creation begins, many concept artists use traditional methods to draw their ideas, but some have moved to a digital approach, including tablets and digital pens.

People in the spotlight

The art world is vast, filled with thousands of people all with incredible talents. Some people enjoy sharing their skills, others enjoy teaching, but some enjoy studying history. There are hundreds of famous people who studied an arts degree; one of them was none other than the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. She studied Art History at the University of St Andrews, where she met her future husband, Prince William.
