What a career in Crime and Criminal Justice looks like

Deciding on a career path can seem like a tremendous task at the outset. After studying multiple subjects for years, you finally have an idea about what you enjoy learning and potentially the career you want to pursue. The next step is to look for a degree in the industry you want to head into.

In this blog, we will look at one of the many careers you can have after you graduate with a Crime and Criminal Justice degree. There are plenty of options in both the public and private sector, working in victim support, crime prevention, offender management and rehabilitation services.


There are many career options you can have by obtaining a Crime and Criminal Justice degree, one popular option for many is working with criminals and supporting their rehabilitation. Known as a penologist, their job role is to work alongside prison officers to help reduce crime and offer advice to inmates who are still in custody. Upon release, they will continue to have meetings and work alongside former criminals in order to put them on the right path and live life as a good citizen.


On a day-to-day basis, a penologist may work in a variety of different institutions. Going round to multiple areas, having meetings with different inmates, but then they may also go to the homes and areas where ex-criminals live to try and help them improve their life. They could help with job searches, interview advice, but also delve down into the mental health and wellbeing of each client.


Some people choose to go on and study at a Postgraduate level in order to become a lawyer or teachers, fortunately at the University of Bolton our great facilities and passionate lecturers will support whatever career path you wish to take.
