What a career in English and Creative Writing looks like

Deciding on a career path can seem like a tremendous task to begin with. After studying multiple subjects for years, you finally have an idea about what you enjoy learning and potentially a career to pursue. The next step is to look for a degree in the industry you want to head into.

In this blog, we will discuss some career options that you can have after obtaining an English and Creative Writing degree. Falling in love with the written word is not uncommon. While many may dream of becoming a famed author one day, there are other careers which can ignite your creative flair. By the end of this blog, you’ll know a little bit more about the sector and be inspired by a famous face who studied in the industry

Potential careers

There are many ways to get into writing, you might enjoy writing about an area within pop culture; films, music, art, etc. Or being creative and writing short stories, but one popular choice for graduates is to become a journalist or blogger.

Journalism quite often involves such in-depth research work, digging to the bottom of the story to get the full picture and then turn it into engaging copy, leaving the reader wanting more.

Day-to-day, a journalist will be hunting down their next story; scrolling through social media, news outlets, listening to the radio/TV and be ready to take ‘pen to paper’. Other journalists who don’t write for the papers, might spend months documenting extraordinary events before writing them into a long, informative and entertaining piece.

The power of the written word is what drives the journalists, they’re always soaking up the news and trying to get the latest ‘scoop’, whether they are employed in-house, or freelancers.

In the spotlight

Many people will embark upon the journey to become a journalist. One of them was Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt, who studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He was poached for his good looks before his degree was complete, so he dropped out to pursue a career in acting instead. Pitt has stated that journalism will always be his first passion.
