The increasing demand for healthcare, pressure on NHS resources and a shortage of clinicians is causing occupational boundaries to be redefined, with clinical tasks transferred or redistributed between different team members to make more efficient and cost-effective use of staffing.
A result of this has been the development of the Assistant Practitioner (AP) role, a high-level support worker who works across professional boundaries in a range of settings. AP’s work within the wider health and social care team and have direct contact with patients, service users or clients providing high quality and compassionate care. AP’s work at a level above that of the traditional Healthcare Support Workers and gain a more in-depth understanding of factors that influence health and ill-health. At the University of Bolton, our Higher Apprenticeship is a great opportunity for new and existing health and social care support staff who demonstrate their potential and desire to take on the greater responsibilities and challenges offered by the AP role. We offer a winning combination of theory and practice to develop your skills, knowledge and values according to the needs of the workplace. The AP role is extremely beneficial to the workforce skill mix.
It is truly a generic one that can be flexible and adapted to what your practice area requires. Whether your workplace requires nursing support, allied health or social work support, the AP role and responsibilities can be tailored to suit.
